WHY SHOULD I JOIN THE CEG COMEDY WRITERS PROGRAM?

Many reasons… but first of all, because it is a mentor-ship program meant to help Christian writers create content that is relevant to pop culture. Why? Because we need to be better storytellers and content creators. If we are able to do this, we will be more effective in portraying the true nature of Christ to the world. What better way to learn how to reach pop culture than to learn from someone who is working right in the middle of it? You will hear real talk, real words of wisdom and mentor-ship. We want to help you because entertainment is one of the mostly influential mediums in the world. We must be the best we can be within this industry and ministry.

FROM CONCEPT TO PITCH HERE IS WHAT YOU WILL LEARN:

2018 CEG COMEDY WRITERS PROGRAM

The CEG Comedy Writer’s Program will run from June through October, 2018. Up to 20 participants in the CEG Comedy Writers Program will advance to Semi-Finalist through the submission of a One Sheet for an original TV pilot story idea. This One Sheet is due by noon on Tuesday, July 3, 2018 through electronic submission to Development@ChristianEntertainmentGuild.com. The winning semi-finalists will be mentored through the CEG Comedy Writers Program and to include mentorship by Writer/Creator/Show Runner – Jim O’Doherty. Semi-Finalist mentorship will include support and instruction in the development of a half hour TV pilot script. The CEG Comedy Writers Program workshops will also be open to others as space allows as an opportunity for writers to learn to create professional level TV pilot scripts. All semi-finalists and finalists must register for the the full workshop and turn in all assignments. The CEG Comedy Writer’s Program will continue and include every other Saturday morning workshops that will teach essential skills for writers in the development of a ½ hour comedy TV pilot -basics of writing for TV, where stories and concepts come from, how to create a One Sheet, how to put together a TV pilot script, character development, writing dialogue, how to pitch, basics of the writer’s room, table readings and how to get an agent or manager.  Special guests may speak in various phases of the workshop. We hope that participants will come out of the CEG Comedy Writer’s Program with a solid comedic spec script that is required to get agency representation.  At the end of the CEG Comedy Writer’s Program, one finalist participant will be selected as the winner. CEG will have the option to produce sizzle reels or pilots of the winning scripts.

JUDGING PROCESS

Semi-Finalist One Sheets will be submitted to a panel of show runners, producers and comedians. Finalist scripts will be submitted to the CEG Comedy Writer’s Executive Team and may also include show runners, writers, producers, agents, managers, entertainment attorneys, development executives and distributors in the entertainment industry through the Christian Entertainment Guild who will serve as judges for the Project. There will be three rounds of judging. Writers whose One Sheet are selected by the first round of judges will be considered Semi Finalists. Semi Finalists who continue through the CEG Comedy Writer’s Program and development of their script, will have their scripts submitted to a second round of judging, which will result in the selection of CEG Comedy Writer’s Program Finalists. These final selections will be considered for production as a pilot through the CEG Mentorship Program with the winning script to be produced at the discretion of CEG. Final judging will include showrunners and other working entertainment professionals including producers, manager, agent, heads of acquisition and development or distributors. In the event of non-consensus on the winner, the CEG Comedy Writers Program executive  committee of Jim O’Doherty, Joey Scott, Hunington Sachs and Suzy Sachs will make the final decision. Judging will be on the basis of blind submissions; no names or other identifying information will appear on the literary material submitted to the judges. Judges will be required to return or delete the literary material upon completion of judging.

Please note: Each participant will be judged on the One Sheet initially and then the spec script or original pilot for finalists that has been completed within the CEG Comedy Writer’s Program. Judges will have the option of reading a writing sample or second submission from participants. A second piece of material may be attached to your Application which may be used if requested by a judge.

COST:  Registration for the CEG Writer’s Program Workshop is $50 per session  or a total of $500 for all 10 or 11 sessions. This helps to cover costs.  Financial aid is available.
