Screenwriting 101:

Intro to screenwriting

This introduction to screenwriting class is perfect for those wanting to begin to bring to life their stories. You will be introduced to the basics of story format, character development, 3 act plot structure and the importance of identifying your audience and distribution before you begin to write. This class will also explore concepts for new content, writing development exercises and an introduction to different writing formats including feature length, original TV content, spec scripts, and web series. The goal of the course is to give new writers a foundation in writing and understanding the basic structure of writing for TV, film or web in order to prepare to write their own scripts. Log lines will also be covered which are your tool to getting accepted into your next screenwriting class. Screenwriting 101 meets weekly for one hour and approximately 10 sessions. Weeknight or Saturday morning options are available.

Screenwriting 201

Writing the treatment

Screenwriting 201 is the first in a three-part sequence of a professional writing series created to take you through the process of writing a feature length screenplay and developing it. In this course you will learn about the foundations of a great story as you construct your own with the support of a CEG vetted professional writer, your instructor. Screenwriting 201 includes strengthening and developing a solid concept, elements of compelling story structure, creating characters that appeal to top actors, charting a complex plot, and a well built story outline as well as how character needs, desires, goals and obstacles drive a compelling screenplay. Your Screenwriting 201 goal is to create an outline or treatment that sets forth the structure for writing your screenplay. Creating an amazing outline is an important tool for professional screenwriters in their work towards powerful script development as well as pitching. It is also required for getting into Screenwriting 202.

SCREENWRITING 202

Writing your script

Screenwriting 202 is the second segment of a three-part writing sequence. Please bring your approved log line, story outline, beat sheet or treatment to the first class and be prepared to pitch it. Your professional writer instructor and mentor will give you solid feedback on how to strengthen your story as you begin to build it. CEG Screenwriting 202 includes identifying your target audience and then diving deep into the spiritual journey of your characters, story, conflict, etc. whether you are writing a faith film or not, for TV or animation. You will also work on more in depth story structure points that can take your script to the next level including plot points, scene and story development, characters, theme, genre, dialogue, and how they all work together to build an excellent story. Course includes both lecture and personalized feedback. Homework and reading assignments are necessary for your success.  Your goal for this session is to complete a draft of your script as well as to strengthen your writing as you work towards becoming a professional level writer. *** please note class hours may be lessened in order for instructor to provide additional written feedback on your class progress in script development. An approved first draft of your screenplay draft is required for admission into Screenwriting 203 or 301 and above courses.

Screenwriting 203 is the third segment of a three-part writing sequence. Please bring the first draft of your approved script to the first class. CEG Screenwriting 203 dives into the development of your project and preparing it to produce yourself, pitch to agents, distributors or production companies. You will learn and work through the process of developing your own project, creating a story bible, pitch deck and presentation materials. Homework and reading assignments are necessary for your success. Note: This course may be repeated and is a pre-requisite for Screenwriting 301 classes. Course requirements: Final Draft. Please be prepared to write within the class time.

Screenwriting 207

PARABLE WRITING 

Do you have a story God has placed on your heart that is rooted in parables of the bible? The parables of Jesus are a large part of Jesus’ teaching and the bible. He simplified his messages and truths to share them in a way that was relatable to the people, yet conveyed a valuable moral lesson. In this course we will delve deeper into the spiritual journey of story starting with parables. We will connect bible principles and stories to modern story telling illustrating the parables found in the bible. Encouraging and helping others to create stories that can be significant within pop culture while portraying the true nature of who Christ is, is one of the goals of CEG. 

If you’re excited to write a story based on God’s word and parables this is the course for you. The course goal is to complete a treatment or outline for a screenplay, TV show or novel. Note: Pre-requisite: Screenwriting 101.

Have a true life story you’ve been wanting to bring to life but not sure where to start? Or have one that needs to be strengthened and developed so it can have more potential for distribution? In this class we explore the process and art of crafting compelling stories based on true life events in a way that can increase potential to reach an audience. Based on your writing sample submission you may be placed in this class or a 101 class to set the right foundation for bringing your story to life. 

Acceptance in this program requires submission of a writing sample. Please do so by registering now. 1. Submit the registration form to your right now. 2. Pay the registration fee. This is not the cost of the class, but a placement and evaluation fee. 3. Submit a writing sample. 4. Hold your spot by paying the course fee.

THE RE-WRITE 

CEG Writers program is built in a way meant to help you progress through the development of your writing skills and project.  Looking for that edge that can make your project pop in the sea of other submissions? Willing to dive in and do the hard work? In this class you will be mentored through the process of elevating the quality of your  script and working towards that professional level you need to hit to open doors. 10 week session meets for two hours a week.  Weeknight  and Saturday sessions available. 10 week session include strengthening:

5. Wordsmithing

6. Prep for the pitch

All participants submit a writing sample for placement in the writing path of choice.

COMEDY & SKETCH WRITING

Sketch Writing 101 is the starting point for working to develop your clean comedy writing skills as either a screenwriter, episodic writer or stand up comedian. You will learn skills and exercises for brainstorming, creating and developing comedic characters and dialogue. This course is held virtually through email and Zoom calls. 

Notes:  Sketch Writing 101 is a pre-requisite to Sketch Writing 201. Every session you are given homework and turn in pages for feedback. The course goal is to develop clean comedy writing skills.
