Led By The Holy Spirit

Step #3 to Cultivating A Servant Heart: Be Led By The Holy Spirit. In 1953, Henrietta Mears wrote a book over-viewing God’s word titled, “What the Bible is All About.” In it Miss Mears helps us to remember the importance of seeking God in all that we do and being led by the Holy Spirit. One of the sayings she lived by was “Saturate yourself with the Word of God.” The world teaches us whatever feels good in the moment is the right choice and we should do what we want without considering how our actions affect others. Modern culture encourages us that “it is your right” and “You deserve it”. But this worldly advice leads to an addiction to self and sensual gratification so that we become enslaved by what our fleeting sensual desires dictate. In contrast the scriptures warn us NOT to be driven by our desires or emotions: These people are springs without water and mists driven by a storm. Blackest darkness is reserved for them. 18 For they mouth empty, boastful words and, by appealing to the lustful desires of the flesh, they entice people who are just escaping from those who live in error. 19 They promise them freedom, while they themselves are slaves of depravity—for “people are slaves to whatever has mastered them.” 2 Peter 2:17-19 If we refuse to follow God we follow our own sinful desires and become enslaved to what our bodies want. We might even think we finally have freedom. Instead, what we find is that we are slaves to something else that leads to bondage… bondage to fame, expensive cars, drugs, alcohol, sex, and other things of the flesh. The freedom God gives us when we submit our lives to Him is much more deeply satisfying, life changing. It is freedom from slavery to sin. 2 Peter reminds us to protect ourselves from bondage to things of the world, attacks by frauds who say we can find freedom away from God. True freedom is found with God, through our relationship with Jesus and being led by the Holy Spirit.
